Hello lovelies! Today I'm going to talk about what has become perhaps the most elusive product line in all the beauty industry: Kylie Cosmetics. I thought I understood the hype surrounding her liquid lippies, but boy was I mistaken. After underestimating the sheer level of chaos that ensues when Kylie launches a new product, I was left sitting in a holding zone and then staring sadly at a "sold out" screen the first two times I tried to order.
On my third and final attempt, I had my game face on. I was going to get that liquid lipstick. I did some stretching. I practiced my lightning-fast clicking skills. And I gave Kylie all my information in advance so that I could breeze through checkout. Want my social security number, Kylie? Take it. Firstborn child? It's yours. Once I completely surrendered myself to the unbridled power that is King Kylie, I was able to snag those precious lip products. Read on for my full review of the highly coveted Kylie Cosmetics Birthday Edition Mini Matte Liquid Lipsticks!
So let's start off with packaging. You probably don't need me to tell you that Kylie's packaging is always hella cute. Her birthday edition packaging is even more adorable than usual, as it's dripping in gold. I've heard rumors that she infused all of her birthday products with real gold as well, but I do not see anything like that on the list of ingredients.
At .02 oz each, the mini mattes certainly are mini. All six of these little cuties combined weigh in at .12 oz, which is only .01 oz more than a full size liquid lipstick. A full size sells for $17, while the mini kit is $36, so you do the math. The mini mattes may not be the best value, but I could definitely see how it would be worth it for someone like me who is new to the line. I wanted the chance to sample a bunch of different shades to see which ones I liked best, so that allowed me to justify the price in my head a bit more.
Let's take a quick look at the shades included in this set:
Left to Right: Exposed, Dolce K, Koko K, Candy K, Kristen, and Leo. |
I was also able to justify the price in my head because all the shades in this set are very wearable. If it included some of Kylie's crazier shades, like Kymajesty or 22, I probably would have passed. Exposed, Dolce K, Koko K, and Candy K are all essentially different shades of nude. Even the statement shades, Kristen and Leo, are both tame enough that I could wear them to the office.
As these are matte liquid lipsticks, they can be a bit drying. I've found that I can wear them comfortably for about 4 or 5 hours before they start to really make my lips feel chapped and gross. All of these liquid lippies, especially the darker shades, have a tendency to bleed outside of the lip line a bit. However, as long as you take your time with application and apply a bit of concealer around the edges, you should be good to go. This is not a low-maintenance lip product by any means, but most people that enjoy liquid lipsticks know what they are getting into at this point.
Overall, I really enjoy Kylie's liquid lipsticks. They have great pigmentation and staying power that could technically last you all day long (if you don't mind the dryness). Plus, the yummy buttercream scent certainly doesn't hurt. I don't love these quite as much as my holy-grail Jouer Liquid Lip Crèmes, but they are a close second!
Love this review! I'm not quick enough on the Interwebz, nor remember when the heck she's launching things, so I tend to miss out, but I love reading about her stuff!
